  1. Hi Mis Kolod's Class,
We are Mrs. Dent Scarcello's grade 2 class from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We are looking at your blog and we think it is really neat. We have just finished growing and releasing Painted Lady Butterflies too! In fact, we kept ours inside long enough (because it was cold out) that they laid eggs!! They just started hatching last night.
We learned some things while we had our caterpillars that we thought you might like to know:
    - The red stuff you see is called meconium. It is not blood. It is a part of their life cycle and it comes out when they emerge from their chrysalis.
    - When you can see the wings inside the chrysalis it means they are going to come out soon.
    - We had some chrysalises on the ground and they came out no problem.
We will keep watching to see your progress. Have fun with it!
You can see what happened in our classroom on our blog at www.missdentsclass.blogspot.com and go to the butterflies page.

  2. Dear Mrs. Scarcello's class,

We were so excited to have a post from you! We looked at your blog too and thought it was pretty cool. We have some questions for you too:

    - How big were your caterpillars? Our were about a centimeter when we got them and about a week later they were almost an inch long!
    - It must have been cool to have caterpillar eggs in your classroom. What did they look like?
    - We got to see two of our butterflies hatch. Did you get to see yours hatch?

Thanks for checking in with us! We are done with school on Friday for the summer, but if you get the chance to write us back before then we can't wait to hear from you!

    Your new friends,
    Miss Kolod's Class :)
